Zbig Rybczynski

Born in Poland in 1949, Zbig received a fine arts education as a painter. His active film career began in 1969 at the state Academy of Film in Lodz, Poland. He was awarded the main prize in Cracow in 1974 for his autobiographical film "Zupa" ("Soup"). In 1982 Rybczynski obtained political asylum in Vienna, Austria. He moved to the United States with his wife Wanda and son Pavel shortly after winning an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for his film "Tango" in 1983. His emigration to the States coincided with the "birth" of the MTV. He naturally gravitated to the format of "video-clip" as a means of continuing his experimentation with new technologies.
24 years of constant experimenting in constructivist video and film built of discrete components have recently driven Rybczynski to certain discoveries in "science of image", which, surprisingly, does not exist at the time. He formulated the principles of "visual motion" and "sequence alignment", and on their basis developed the methods a new technique of producing images using digital technologies. His music videos for John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Simple Minds, Pet Shop Boys and other artists garnered numerous awards, including several Monitor Awards, the Billboard Music Video Award, the American Music Video Award, the Silver Lion in Cannes, and, in 1986, the MTV Video Vanguard Award for "visionary in the field of music video."
